India has seen Public Relations consulting evolve in the last two decades. Several large firms are celebrating their silver jubilees this year. Many of the firms mushroomed in the early to mid-90s and over a dozen got acquired by the global biggies. There has been no information publicly available of the largest firms in India by revenue. As we start a new year we take the first step in presenting the list of the biggest PR firms by revenue size.
There was a time when Public Relations was synonymous to chiffon and pearls, and that was the same time when people thought that the profession is about parties and fun. But there is good news for intelligent girls out there – the reputation of the business of managing reputation is finally changing and people understand that it is a brainy job that cannot be successfully handled by just any person.
Business Development (BD) is an integral part of any organisation and works more or less in a similar fashion everywhere. In some Public Relations firms, leads for new businesses are generally brought by the people heading the company or senior members. In others, there is a separate team that works on business development and their sole responsibility is to accomplish their targets.
Crisis management is the process by which an organisation deals with a disruptive and unexpected event that threatens to harm the organisation, its stakeholders, or the general public. Tackling a crisis can be very challenging and difficult most of the times.
Writing and reading is something a child learns from an early age. It starts off as a way to get assimilated into society and to understand what people around you are talking off. As we continue on the path of life, for some people, the reason changes. It becomes more to express than just to stay connected with people.

Women in Public Relations – It isn’t just for the ladies
I am currently planning to organise PR activity for an event next month that is about ‘Women in Engineering’, with the tagline – ‘Engineering isn’t just for blokes.’ During an ideas brainstorm where I was participating in a discussion around the reasons why Engineering is a male-dominated industry, it got me thinking about Public Relations in the same light. While, globally, the majority of entry to management level positions in PR are held by women, we see men holding most of the industry’s top roles at the highest levels.

A few weeks ago, I was a part of a discussion between two senior Public Relations professionals on the correct usage of the words ‘communication’ and ‘communications’. While one of them pointed out that the name of our school which is ‘School of COmmunications & REputation’ should be replaced by the word ‘communication’ the other of course was on the other side of the table. My first reaction was ‘how does it matter!?’ but the conversation left me highly confused.
A large number of business or buying decisions are made on the basis of personal brand value, and not just the rational factors behind it. Several professionals, who are on the front lines of business development or other transactional interpersonal interactions, would agree that it is not just the value of their organisations’ brand, but also their own that plays a role in the success of these transactions.
