I wrote about scenarios that create an unequal and unhealthy relationship. I\u2019m sure many were taken aback. If you missed it, you may read it\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reputationtoday.in\/taking-pride\/the-client-consultant-relationship-is-never-easy\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>. This week the tables are turned and I talk about client servicing. Sadly, if you are reading this you may not be one of those notorious people as they are unlikely to be reading something like this.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Incompetency\"><\/span>1. Incompetency<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The first thing that stands out with the client servicing person that one detests is his or her\u00a0incompetency. It shows instantaneously. Some are good at covering it up with sweet talk and smart dressing but in no time, it begins to show.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Bad_quality_plans\"><\/span>2.\u00a0Bad quality plans<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This person will always\u00a0deliver poor quality<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>plans, reports and documents that have been prepared without due diligence. This can be annoying and lead to avoidable back and forth. One of the reasons clients want to call for a pitch is to avoid dealing with this type of person.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Lack_of_ownership\"><\/span>3. Lack of ownership<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>There are professionals who are unprofessional, and their\u00a0lack of ownership<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>stands out like a sore thumb. We see them in various domains. There are quite a few in Public Relations too. They are the reason the profession gets a bad name.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Absence_of_thinking\"><\/span>4. Absence of thinking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The common crib of journalists about the PR consulting person is that there is an\u00a0absence of thinking. Something that has happened in the last ten years. Several PR professionals who began their careers in the 90s or first half of the last decade thought through and thought out their outreach and thrived.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Bad_Writing_Skills\"><\/span>5. Bad Writing Skills<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Terrible writing skills<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is a major pain point of every second client. It is unbelievable that most young PR professionals in consulting firms do not give this the importance it deserves. Writing is the hinge on which good public relations revolves.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Arrogant_Behavior\"><\/span>6. Arrogant Behavior<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>There is a new breed of people who come with a great degree of\u00a0arrogant\u00a0behavior. These are found in PR consulting firms and many of them are young individuals with a long future ahead of them. They think they can get away forever but end up falling by the way-side.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Difficult_temperaments\"><\/span>7. Difficult temperaments<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Dealing with bad days gets worse for the client who has to deal with the consultant with the bad and\u00a0difficult temperament. There are many who come from very privileged backgrounds and forget that the first step to excellence in client servicing is to have a positive attitude all the time.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_No_sense_of_timing\"><\/span>8. No sense of timing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Public Relations is very often about being at the right place at the right time. However, if there is\u00a0no sense of time and timing<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>there can be disasters. The two are different yet connected. These stem from common sense and are vital to a great relationship between the consultant and the client.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Inability_to_navigate_crisis\"><\/span>9. Inability to navigate crisis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Very often a consultant is expected to manage issues and stop them from becoming a calamity.\u00a0Inability to navigate a crisis\u00a0is often counted as a situation when clients sack the consultancy. And the root cause for this could be the one person on the business who messed up.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Lack_of_domain_expertise\"><\/span>10. Lack of domain expertise<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Reading is an important hallmark of a PR consultant\u2019s day plan.\u00a0Missing domain expertise\u00a0can ruin careers and destroy the relationship between the corporate organisation and the PR firm. The professional who did well in the long run was the one with the best knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>This column was inspired by numerous stories one hears of good and bad consultants.
