From Passion to Profession: Why I chose Public Relations- Blog by Srija Dey
A few years ago, on a random evening, I came across an advertisement, which was released as a part of Dove’s self-esteem project, “Stop the Beauty Test” Campaign. The Campaign shed light on how, young girls become targets of societal standards of beauty and stereotypes within the construct of marriage that limits their sense of self-esteem, image, confidence and perspective as a whole. Dove’s campaign questions and discourages such standards and stereotypes by showcasing the narratives of young women, who are and have been subjected to beauty tests on their appearance, rather than their intellect or potential. Being a woman in my youth myself, this campaign was something I could relate to on a deeper level, both as a woman and as a consumer. The kind of power and influence, a simple yet meaningful campaign can hold to positively impact not only the perspective of young women but society as a whole, fascinated me. It transformed the brand image of Dove, while encouraging girls to embrace their inner beauty. This was one of the moments, that inspired and moved me to strive for such an ability, to be a part of a cause, a bigger picture like this.
My decision to pursue a career in public relations then seemed like an obvious one, motivated by a perfect trio of enthusiasm, potential, and an ambition to change the world. I’ve always been drawn to communicating, connecting with others, and telling stories which led me to investigate the PR industry, where I discovered the ideal platform for expressing my ideas, skills and abilities.
In a world, where we as consumers of media, information, products, services, etc. are striving to be aware and conscious of our consumption, it is also crucial for the providers of such consumption to contribute to guide consumers through such a conscious journey. Public relations can be instrumental in influencing choices and forming public opinion, which is a responsibility I am passionate about pursuing and fulfilling.
It has always sparked my interest how a well-delivered message can induce action, alter people’s perspectives, and build enduring bonds. The capacity to create and disseminate engaging narratives is more crucial than ever in a society where information flows freely.
Moreover, a dynamic industry like public relations will give me the opportunity to have variety in my career. I can imagine having nightmares about a workplace that confines my creativity and ingenuity. For a public relations practitioner, their work is fascinating and stimulating because they are always adjusting to new trends, technology, and problems, which is something
I dream about and aspire to be. Working on product launches, handling crises, or developing brands are just a few of the varied experiences that PR provides, and they all keep me inspired and involved.
My love of telling stories, curiosity in human behaviour, fascination about the dynamic character of the field, and conviction about its potential influence drives me to pursue a career in this field every single day. I can’t wait to start this journey, put forward my best foot and make significant but lasting contributions to the industry and society at large.
