Pursuing a career in storytelling and communication is not just a professional decision for me, it is a deeply personal journey. This field brings together all my interests—writing, journalism, social media, filmmaking—into one meaningful, strategic path where purpose meets creativity.
Public Relations, to me, is where everything I am passionate about; communication, storytelling, social media, journalism and filmmaking converges into a powerful, strategic career in storytelling and communication.
My journey began with a keen interest for stories—how they are told and received, and the kind of emotions these stories evoke. As a Journalism and Filmmaking student, I was trained to observe the world closely, question it critically and express it creatively. Whether it was being behind the camera lens or on the page, I found immense joy in capturing narratives that made a difference. That love for storytelling found new dimensions when I stepped into the world of social media.
As the Social Media Head during my undergraduate studies and later a Social Media Manager at Under25Universe, I did not just limit myself to creating content—I built communities, sparked conversations and learned how powerful digital influence can be. These roles have taught me how communication is not just about broadcasting a message; it’s also about listening, adapting and engaging meaningfully. This reaffirmed my commitment to building a career in communication that is rooted in empathy and relevance.

Social media has been the most dynamic tool in my growth as a communicator. It gave me a platform to combine story telling with impact, strategy with creativity. It became more than just a channel; it became a space where I could experiment, lead, and drive conversations. These experiences helped me understand the broader power of a career in storytelling and communication, especially in today’s youth-led, digitally-driven world.
This is exactly what drew me to the field of Public Relations. Something more than managing public perceptions on the surface, which includes creating trustworthy connections, driving narratives with intention and representing voices with integrity. PR allows me to merge creativity with strategy, instinctiveness with insight and storytelling with structure. Hence, my motive during the course of this programme is to bring in a fresh, culturally aware and youth-centric perspective to the industry—where content does not only inform but works on building trust, fosters a sense of belongingness and induces change.
A career in communication gives me the scope to not just consume or create content but to lead purpose-driven narratives.
I’m excited to join this programme and take my understanding of communication to the next level. I look forward to learning from industry experts, collaborating with like-minded peers, and gaining hands-on experience that bridges traditional media with the evolving digital landscape.
As I take this step forward, I carry with me my love for stories, a keen eye for strategy and my passion for communication. I am excited to see where this career in storytelling and communication takes me and the stories I will be able to be a part of.
Shreya Roy Choudhury, from Durgapur, has completed her BA in Communication Studies Honours in 2025 from Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru. With a strong foundation in journalism, filmmaking and digital media, she brings a unique blend of creativity, strategic thinking and content expertise. A career in storytelling and communication demands clarity, creativity and coherence. Although platforms change, the story remains central. Therefore, professionals must master the art of telling stories that connect instantly.

Perception is built over time. But storytelling speeds that process up. A brand’s story influences how it is seen, heard and understood. Although communication strategies may differ, story telling brings consistency and emotion into the picture.
Moreover, consistent storytelling across platforms helps align internal and external narratives. Hence, communicators must ensure the brand story is authentic. Therefore, professionals working in communication must learn to construct narratives that reflect reality but inspire engagement.
An effective story does more than entertain. It builds trust. It informs and influences. Hence, the best communication stories are those with a strong purpose. They are relatable and well-timed.
Although data plays a huge role, storytelling humanises it. A number tells you what happened. A story tells you why it matters. Therefore, content without context can never create impact. But storytelling provides that essential context.
The audience reacts to emotions, not just information. Therefore, emotional engagement is at the heart of great communication. Storytelling enables this emotional bridge.
Although logic persuades, emotions compel action. Hence, communication professionals must tell stories that strike emotional chords. Be it pride, urgency, belonging or humour—emotion drives recall. Therefore, storytelling remains the most human way to communicate in an increasingly automated world.
For those building a career in communication, it is crucial to stay observant and adaptive. Trends change. Platforms evolve. But stories remain.
Hence, students and young professionals should build storytelling skills across mediums—text, video, audio, visual. Moreover, they must focus on listening. Stories are not created in silos but in context.
Although academic training offers frameworks, real growth comes from practice. Therefore, internships, content projects, social media work, and even blogging add immense value. These avenues allow students to shape their own voice.
